The title is the question. I'm taking fishtheice's advice to another poster and making this poll. I can't believe they didn't do it already. Anyways....

Question:
Should the U.S. be a member of the United Nations?

Choices:
Yes
No
A big political MAYBE

From the "McCain to kill the UN" thread in the general discussion forum, I couldn't believe this:

"Yet McCain cannot oppose the UN outright – because the American people support it so passionately."

I've never met a fellow American that was passionately supportive of the UN. All of the folks I've spoken with about the UN, want out of that worthless organization, and I agree.

^^^I said the same thing. I don't know where they got that stat that said 72% of Americans support us being in the UN. I've never met another American that approved of the United Nations but apparently they are out there since the poll is all tied up a 3-3. Hmh.

I voted no. The UN is remnicent of its' predecessor, the League of Nations. They were just as ineffectcual (see WWII). The idea is a good one, but as long as there are fundamental differences (such as culture and religion) between nations, the chance of complete success is shaky at best. I also see no benefit of belonging to an organization where a fair number of the members resent us (whether they openly admit it or not). Should we oppose them? No. Should we help them? Depends on the situation. But there is no reason to belong to them. Declare a friendly status with peaceful nations and help them when possible.

How could it be?

How could my fellow board members be so blind as to answer..."yes"?

It's interesting that all the written responses are negative, yet the positive votes give no reason why they believe we should be part of the UN. Confused

I said yes, but I meant to say no.

If the US isn't in it then the United Nations falls apart, and the United Nations needs an overhaul. When Russia invaded Georgia where was the UN? Where was the UN when Tibetans were protesting Chinese rule? And every time the UN does actually stand up to someone (us invading Iraq) nobody listens.

The UN either needs to be much more informal so they can serve as more of a forum for international communication, or much stronger to actually enforce policies. I prefer the former because you can't make all of the countries in the world agree with each other, and if the US and Russia or China were to go to war tomorrow I can guarantee every country wouldn't choose the same side.

Its a poll, not a essay contest/debate.

Just because it's not going the way you wish, doesn't mean you need to try to invalidate it, or whine that people need to explain themselves.

The UN is supposed to be a world peace organization, not a U.S.A. personal secretary. Because of this, the U.S. needs to be in. How can we be one of the "leaders" of the world if we separate ourselves from it? We can't leave the U.N. no matter how ineffectual it is. What we can do is change it and give it power, not boycott it and take matters into our own hands. America needs to maybe lay low for awhile after this whole Iraq thing and then we can be big again. If we continue with our macho posturing, we are Rome 2.0.

Maybe the people who vote no just have the loudest voices, and they get their opinions from the guys with the biggest microphones.

Why do you think we should lead the world? Why is that our responsibility? Why do I pay taxes to support anyone other than Americans? Which countries contribute to the betterment of America? How does the UN benefit us? The UN seems to disagree with everything we do but come to us first when they need the smack layed down.

UN=All bark, no bite

US=Not enough bark, lots of bite

The U.S. doesn't have to be the leader of the world. Bush has been saying that we "lead the free world" in his 8 years in office, though.

I wasn't saying we need to be a leader of the world. I was saying we need to be a part of the world; a part of the global community. What kind of message would it send to leave a global organization where we have one of the 5 top permanent seats?

I don't agree with a lot of the stuff GW says/does.

Tell me how the UN has made the world a better place? Justify my brother's-in-arms fighting under the command of a foreign General. Why does the UN pick and choose which genocides to intervene in?

The UN is just another political machine invented to benefit and progress the agenda of the ruling class.

Politically you may have a point. I don't agree with it...i favor the UN. It is the center of World Opinion.

Please consider the UNICEF, World Health Organization, the non-political side of the UN is enormously benefitial...

Yeah I read that news article that said that Americans are so "passionate" about being part of that NWO front group... It's obvious that statement was placed there as a phsycological trigger for the reader to follow the herd so to speak.... You know what I'm saying? The writer basically put it in your head that the majority are crazy about the U.N. so if this statement is being read by the average brain dead american then they are being pushed to favorably approve of the U.S. membership.
