Simple question... Will Cliff Lee bring the second cy young award to cleveland in as many years.

Currently, he leads the league with 14 wins and has an unbelieveable ERA of 2.29. There are 2 other pitchers with 13 wins (Mussina (NYY) and J.Saunders (LAA)), both who pitch on teams where many of their victories could be had even if they give up 6 runs in 5 innings because their team actually produces some run support.

It is clearly a possibility and knock on wood that he can keep it up, we don't really have a whole lot else to look forward to this year for baseball.

GO BROWNS!

Question:
Will Cliff Lee win the Cy Young award?

Choices:
yes
no
I'm not voting so I don't jinx him...

Unless Lee's season is significantly better than his closest competitors, he won't win. Why? Why does the MVP always seem to go to the best offensive player on the best team? That's just how they do the awards. I think Roy Halladay won the Cy Young on some bad Toronto teams, but he was head and shoulders above his closest competition. I am happy to see Cliff have the success, I just hope he can maintain this level for a couple years. I feel like the Indians are "wasting" all this quality pitching on a year in which they aren't in contention. Unless Cliff has 20+ wins and keeps the ERA below 2.50, I think it will go to the pitcher on a playoff team.

If he has the most wins and best ERA in the AL ... then it will be a complete joke if he doesn't win.

Like A Rod winning the MVP on the Rangers? I think the fact that Lee got the start at the All star game is proof that nobody is over looking his season so far. But there's still a lot of baseball left, so we'll see what happens.

If DA has one more bad game, I'm taking his pic out of my sig...

Agreed that nobody is overlooking it. The rotation for the All Star game is picked by the manager of the AL squad, and the Cy Young is voted on by the baseball writers, I don't think Terry Francona has a vote there. Besides, CC got the Cy Young last year, it was nice, but then Beckett showed who was really the best pitcher when the chips were down. I understand the Cy Young is not a post season award; still it seemed pretty empty. I'd take 1 World Series Championship before I'd take 100 Cy Young awards.

I think its hard to say right now. Cliff Lee would certainly be a solid canidate if the season ended tomorrow. There are a few AL pitchers who have pretty good numbers and are pitching very well. Who knowns what a little time will bring. The Indians are 1 game under .500 since the break but they still are still having trouble producing consistent offense and run support. If the Indians can give Lee enough of a boost the remainder of the season I think he would have a shot at winning it. He has to keep his ERA down and continue to get wins. Who knows maybe the Tribe will hit a streak and finish up the year above .500.

Well, a month since my last post, and I have to agree with PastorMC and others: Cliff has to be the odds on favorite to win the Cy Young in the AL. I only wish we could do something like shut him down, and save some of those performances for next year! But...it doesn't work that way, next year will be completely unrelated. I think what killed the Indians this year was the lack of hitting.

Trevilli-- Glad to see you mentioned Cy Young and not MVP. The Cy Young is based on pitching performance. I figured you knew that and it was just a slip up in your first post. Now what they base MVP on I haven't a clue?????????

No, it wasn't a slip. I was asking the question about the MVP to say, "Why is it only the good teams that get consideration for MVP, isn't it possible that the MVP is actually on a bad team?" Sorry if it wasn't clear, I wasn't suggesting that Cliff Lee get the MVP award.

Sorry! Was just staying with the question.

I have to learn to adapt.

As trevilli mentioned, awards go--almost exclusively--to players on contending teams.

I think Cliff Lee will win the Cy Young award. I want everyone to consider two things: (1) If Cliff would have had this season, last year, we would have our World Championship, and (2) Gaylord Perry was 24-16 one year, 19-12 another and 22-14 a third, on a team that wasn't any good. One of the three years (forget which) he won 14 or 15 in a row. How great was that!
