I doubt I need to say anything to hype this movie up even more than it already it is.
But, this movie is being predicted to have the biggest opening weekend of all time. Some are even estimating a $170 - to even $200 million opening weekend. I can't wait to see Ledger's "Joker" performance as it's being hyped for an Oscar by everybody and their mother. I can't wait. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

If anyone gives a spoiler to this movie...PLEASE note before you give the spoiler that you'll be giving a spoiler! Some people like to be surprised. Thanks

If they actually give Ledger an Oscar because he died, it will not be that big of a deal but will prove to everyone how awful the Academy Awards are. No summer movie should get anything more than a "Best Sound" or "Best Editing" Oscar. I'm not holding my breath for this movie. It will be good, definitely better than Iron Man, but not an all-time great. Give that title to Wall-E, please.

Ledger was receiving praise even before his targic death. People like you are the reason I hate arguing over this to begin with, because you don't do any research. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Ledger would get the Oscar because of his performance, not because of his death.
Wall-E? Seriously? Wall-E's an all time great? Wow.I'm speechless |

I'm worried now because there's soooo much hype. I'm afraid people are building it up too much... My wife, who is a movie critic for 2 major papers as well as online sources like rotten tomatoes and pop matters, saw it last monday and she said it was really good (and she's a fan of the franchise, for sure), but that some people/critics are really going off the deep end about both ledger's performance and the film itself.
on a side note, I am a huge fan of the first hellboy movie (one of my all-time faves), but man, did the new one su-diddly-uck. ----------------------------- I get paid to watch TV all day |

I'm not sure why you would assume that, when it's actually quite rare. Looks like if he did get it, it would be despite his death not because of it: Oscar watchers dampen award hype for Ledger's Joker Wednesday July 16 3:59 PM ET When the new Batman movie "The Dark Night" began screenings last month before its U.S. debut on Friday, some moviegoers saw Heath Ledger as an instant Oscar candidate as the deranged villain, The Joker. But Oscar watchers and veteran critics say the joke may be on fans creating mostly Internet-based buzz because an Academy Award for the Australian actor, who died of an accidental drug overdose in January, would be a rare event. Only one actor has won an Oscar after death, Peter Finch for 1976's "Network." "Dark Knight" is the type of comic book, action adventure that Oscar voters generally do not favor and there are many movies to see later this year, the experts said. Still, Ledger's critically hailed performance may bring a nomination for the U.S. film industry's top award, to be presented next on February 22, 2009. "All this Oscar talk is a phenomenon of the Internet age that I like to call 'a wish-fulfillment rumor.' If people say it often enough, they think it will happen," said Leonard Maltin, film critic for TV program "Entertainment Tonight." "That's not to say it might not happen," he said, citing a "great performance" by Ledger. "But I assure you that the people who are spreading all this are neither Oscar voters nor (Hollywood) movers and shakers." Tom O'Neil, a columnist for award-watching Web site The Envelope.com, said "it really looks good" for a nomination but was "a long shot" to win. Hollywood has a long history of seeing big stars -- James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Bruce Lee among them -- appearing in high-profile films released after their untimely deaths. O'Neil said that when Finch died, Hollywood was in the middle of Oscar season and also in shock. Prior to that, Robert De Niro was sweeping the critics' awards for "Taxi Driver." Veteran Oscar watcher O'Neil also sees parallels between the truncated careers of Ledger and James Dean. "Like Heath, James Dean was a heartthrob star who was considered a serious actor, who died tragically young," O'Neil said. "He was nominated twice posthumously, for "East of Eden" and "Giant," and he lost both times." Even the legendary Spencer Tracy was ignored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which gives out the Oscars, after he died in 1967 just as "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?" was coming. And he was the front-runner, O'Neil said. Tracy's co-star Katharine Hepburn did win best actress for "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?" "That's how reluctant Oscar voters are to hug the dead," O'Neil said. "These awards are all about hugs and there's something creepy about embracing the dead." http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/va/20080716/121624914500.html |

That's awesome that wife is a movie critic! I have to BEG my wife to see a movie with me. She'll only see this one with me because it has her boyfriend Christian Bale in it and because I coordinated a fancy dinner around it. Otherwise, I would be seeing it by myself like some creepy dude. Do you get to see advance screenings with her? The History channel ran a special on the psychology of Batman last night... for those interested in that kind of stuff, I'm sure it will air again. ********************************************************************* "If we win a game everybody is happy, if you lose everybody’s sad. I used to go to just about every screening with her, but then I started working a 2pm-10pm shift, and the majority of screenings are 7:30-ish. once in a while I still make it... and the distributors also send her DVD screeners on occasion- mainly for more indie-ish films, though. it's really cool around oscar time, 'cause our mailbox is flooded with "for your consideration" DVDs for critics voting for academy awards. and she actually taped that batman thing on the history channel and we'll probably watch it tonight. looking forward to it. sorry you had to cajole your wife into going- did she like the movie? ----------------------------- I get paid to watch TV all day |

haven't gone yet ... scheduled for tomorrow. I have to make sure I fandango my tix early tomorrow so that I don't end up shelling out for fine dining and 6 hrs of babysitter only to end up empty handed. She'll probably like it becaue of Bale ... but she scares easily. I'm sure this one will give her nightmares and I'll owe her a chick flick. Well your wife has one of my many dream jobs ... movie critic, Browns QB, video game tester, beer taster, gigolo ... and if you really get paid to watch TV, then you have a supreme gig too. If it is not apparent, I am NOT currently in one of my dream jobs. ********************************************************************* "If we win a game everybody is happy, if you lose everybody’s sad. oh yeah, I forgot the movie doesn't open 'til tomorrow. you guys are brave to go on opening night! it's gonna be packed... well, I hope she does like it and doesn't have nightmares- or it'll be "white oleander II" for you! ha ha... if you want to check out a little of my significant others' work, see: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/author/author-12955/ your list of dream jobs is great! the only one I'd add is "drummer for whatever major, arena-playing band I'm into this week" I do watch TV for a living- but it's not all la-z-boys and cheetos! have to listen to 4-8 tracks of audio for any kind of anomalies or levels that are too high/low, measure chroma (color) and luminence (bright/dark), note bad frames (you get *really* used to seeing things happen in a 30th of a second). anyway, not complaining, but after a few years, my eyes are getting a little tired of having video/computer screens in front of them all day and then some more when I get home... what do you do, if I may ask? ----------------------------- I get paid to watch TV all day |

I was speechless after I saw Wall-E because it was so great. Right up there with Finding Nemo. I loved it. Anyway, With the Heath Ledger thing, everyone started talking Oscar right after his death just because he died. Believe me, if he actually gives a Best Actor performance, I will want him to get it. The problem is that everyone has been talking about an Oscar long before the movie even came out. And everyone knows how stupid the Academy is sometimes. Like giving best picture to Chicago instead of Gangs of New York. |

trick bunny - you're wife has some good one-liners and zingers. I like the one for Zombie Strippers... did you partake in the screening of that one with your bride?
Pretty clear to me that I'm not talented enough to write a eloquent, concise review like these. I'll just have to stick to what I do .. for now... counting beans. One, two, three beans Ha ha ha. I'm sorry but I think I have to cross your job off my dream list. I prefer lazyboys and cheetos with my tv. Nikateen ... sorry for derailing your thread, I'll post my review after my date tomorrow. ********************************************************************* "If we win a game everybody is happy, if you lose everybody’s sad. hey man, at least you're probably making some decent beans if you're counting beans! nikateen- my regrets for derailing the thread as well. back on track now... ----------------------------- I get paid to watch TV all day |

I'm seeing this tonight. :drools:
And to the people who apologized for derailing this thread, it's ok. It's cool to hear that someone's wife is a movie critic. That's this man's dream. Anyway, I have heard nothing but great things about this, literally. They're still picking this film to devour Titanic's record setting opening weekend, let's hope that holds true. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
