The Browns organization loses again. Putting up the white flag again, another year of looking forward to the draft and I am NOT feeling this sudden giddy joy of “Yaaaayy Brady Quinn”. I am disgusted with this organization, another poor decision. Another poor season.
They did the right thing keeping Derek Anderson as the QB all last year. Brady Quinn needed to be benched after holding out and what better way to get him prepared than to sit him an entire season and spring training. I was totally on board. Then the offseason started, we have people wanting Derek Anderson. Some said that we should get a first round pick for hi and take it, hands down. The organization felt otherwise and signed him to a deal, I was not on board with this move. It appeared Dallas wanted to give us their first and third, what they did with him, who cares. I was on board with THAT decision I lobbied anyone who would listen for this plan, it didn’t happen. So we start the season with the “Derek Anderson is our guy” statement. Half way through the season we change our mind and out the guy we just gave a brand new contract on the bench. The sad part about all of this is that is was DA who played the murderers row of tough defenses to start the season. Dallas, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Bengals (they beat Jacksonville), Giants, Redskins, Jacksonville, Baltimore, that is a brutal schedule. I do not like the decision to start Brady one bit, if anything the Browns organization loses again. We eat salary for DA and we miss out on SOMETHING in the form of draft picks for him. Unless Phil makes some crazy move to trade DA and someone else this is going to look like wasted draft picks to me. I will concede that it doesn’t mean the drafts picks wouldn’t have been busts anyway. The problem that I have with is that 1. We lead the league in drops, if we go to middle of the pack in drops this might be a totally different season. If we get into the bottom 10 of drops, this season is looking GREAT. Now that is JMO but I think we win at least 2 maybe 3 more games. I am sorry, I don’t care that falls on the coaching staff, not DA. You have to stop the bleeding at some point with the drops, and then add in the penalties and the coaching staff looks horrendous. I don’t know of another coach in the league that could keep his cool after so many unforced penalties. Now we get to see Quinn, primetime in front of the nation with 4 days to prepare. It just feels like a rushed decision for me. Like someone from the top said enough is enough we need to see what Quinn can do. Let’s not act like Derek Anderson played all that bad against Baltimore, he played much much worse in Washington. You think, ok he didn’t get benched then, so no way he gets benched after this performance going on a 4 day week. Wrong, they start him, it sounds fishy to me. So now we are starting Brady Quinn, I can’t say I disagree with the decision, we need to know what he can do since the season is basically over barring some monumental collapse of Baltimore and Pittpuke. I do think this guy is our future and he would be looking pretty nice right now if we had those DA picks to support him. This team is too young, immature and inexperienced to win on the big stage anyway so we better at least fix our QB position before we can contend. The Browns lose again because we aren’t going to sniff the playoffs this season as BQ will be a “rookie” this year since DA was a “rookie” last year. You know the drill when you have two QB’s you have none. We can’t turn back now, we can’t BQ is the guy from here on out. You think Derek will stay after the fans chanted Brady at him. So when the fans are asking for DA again because BE drops passes like it’s no tomorrow the fans will loose again. All I gotta say is that we can never put DA back in there or we are in for another long decade of Browns football. The mishandling of the DA situation might end up costing a Savage a job if Quinn doesn’t pan out. We have a LOT riding on a QB from Notre Dame, who didn’t play well against top competition. Granted he has had a year to sit and was the “most NFL ready” QB in the draft. Jamarcus Russell went ahead of him and he sucks. Joe Thomas was the right pick and while he has struggled a small amount this year compared to last (look at the competition) but he has only been in the league two year. So had Brady, they are both going to struggle at times, they will give us the best chance to win in the long run I do believe, but seeing is believing. People will have big time interest in the up coming draft as we finally have a first round pick and hopes, expectations and “superbowl chants” maybe even. What scares me is that we might be in the same position next year as we are this year with Anderson with Quinn. I feel it is make or break for the Browns now, either we win with Quinn or we are in QB mediocrity forever. Oh well, lets put all our hopes into the back…..again. :Sigh: Anyone who is talking about playoffs is fooling themselves. Unless BQ is Peyton Manning or Dan Marino forget about. So the fans lose again because the fans induce a premature decision. This isn’t something the fans should have any say in and it upsets me. Now I have heard things about this coming from over his head and it worries me even more. If RAC isn’t caling the roster shots, something is wrong and RAC is probably gone. The fans lose again trying to start over with a new coach. This type of move also look bad on us as an organization, it does send the “What happens if I don’t play well” message. Why would players want to come here if they see us treating other players like this? You don’t change QB’s mid season and now we have almost completely deflated DA’s trade stock if we felt he wasn’t the guy. So what was the point? We lose on DA’s trade value and we throw Quinn out there. The sad part is that I think the reason they are doing it is because they think he isn’t the guy and want to find out for sure so the fans shut up when DA comes back in. Naah that would be too methodical for this organization. It is a knee jerk reaction and it reflects poorly management and on a guy I have admired so far for his handling of this situation in Phil Savage, unless it came from higher? Let’s hope the Browns don’t lose again with Quinn. With that said, I will be attending the game, so GO QUINN GO! I will be there for the beginning of the Brady Quinn Era! Heres to a brilliant career Brady!!! I hope we chant Brady Brady Brady!!!!!! And not leaving at halftime! -Two years, two Pro Bowls- |

Its as simple as this, DA isn't getting it done, period. even if you give him the 12 or 14 balls that Braylon has dropped, this guy hasn't been consistently good since mid way through the last year. It's just time.

Bpg,
For the most incredibly well stated. The Browns just can't seem to run a team like responsible adults. It's just sad and tiresome the mis-management of this situation. and the position it puts us in if Quinn Sucks, then it's rebuilding time. Replace QB, while ignoring all of the obvious issues that I see on the field every week. That is why this organization is a joke. |

Da will be so lucky to get out of this organization that listens to ignorance/fans!!!
Good luck to brady quinn i hope he is the 07 spark in 08! |

The position it puts us in "IF" Quinn sucks. Look at the position we're in cause Anderson "DOES" suck. |

it may be your opinion BPG that the orgainization is throwing in the towel and calling the season! I however dont see it that way.
i agree, Derek didn't play a bad game on sunday, i was there, BUT... BUT he did only guide us to 1 first down in the final 4 drives and in all reality, it was cribbs & Dawson that got us 20pts! Derek on had 2 good drives the whole game, the remaining drives he was inconsistent, as well as he doesn't have fire out there! whereas the Rookie QB on the otherside looked like a seasoned VET and outplayed, outsmarted our team. i think the coaches reviewed as well as Savage & Lerner and thought can we be any worse now with Brady Quinn starting? We just had a Rookie QB, come into our Stadium and put on 30 pts on us. the Organization has to find out what we got in Quinn now. They know what they got in DA and yes he may still end up on our team next year, who knows, but if Brady wasn't going to see any snaps this year, i would've bet any amount of $$$ that Quinn and his agent would have demanded to either be the starter for the 2009 season or trade me now! DA had a good year last year, but i think Braylon and Winslow also made some hellascious catches for him, also Cribbs... at least 2-3 times a game, but him and the offense in good-to-great field position. unfortunately, we do not have another WR who can step in and start for Braylon, at least for a game. I think that guy needs to sit and get a wake up call. Look as Winslow now. He caught everything thrown to him yesterday (could've had 2 more receptions, but they were called back). But Braylon and his best friend (Donte) is really hurting this team right now. we will find out Thursday night with Brady in there. both teams short week, Denver has to travel and they are coming off what 3 consecutive losses. Brady and the offense needs to put some points on the board, even if its his 1st start, because the Broncos defense has been ranked near dead last in the NFL this season. |

Anderson played above the level of the rest of the team in the Ravens loss. Edwards didn't. That drop of the perfect ball into his hands on what should have been a touchdown throw was another inexplicable drop. Anderson made a horrible decision on the pick, but he hadn't thrown one in quite a long time & the playcalling was exposing him to more and more pressure. The QB plays with a team, and the team discipline and gameplanning and playcalling are lacking. This reposes with the head coach. Team discipline had improved in some ways (fewer false start penalties, for example). But the playcalling, and the underutilization of Harrison against Baltimore, and the failure to sit Edwards when he clearly isn't performing (if DA had as many interceptions as Edwards has dropped 30+ yard passes, he would never have started), are issues for the head coach to intervene. I like RC. I'm disappointed & while I admire Quinn's abilities (& maybe we need the intermediate game accentuated given the inability of Edwards to hold onto the long ball), I think this decision isn't best for the Browns or fair to Anderson. Still, I hope it somehow works for the best.

the organization doesn't lose. every move made by the organization is micromanaged to maximize profit, like when to start quinn (contract incentives). i bet you won't be able to find a DA jersey at the stadium, they'll be pushing so much quinn stuff. if the fans would stop spending money on EVERYTHING the organization would lose sponsers then things would change, until then it's the fans who lose.

I agree with what you say BpG.
The question I want answered is Who is making the decisions? and who has input? Is the left hand talking to the right hand? I have always thought Savage was in love with DA and always wanted him to start. He was his guy and wanted him to succeed. I don't know if RAC felt the same way or not, but I never believed he made many of the decisions. Now it seems the Owner has stepped in a made his feelings heard. The problem is communication. The same day the coach per claims DA the starter, a story comes out saying Quinn is the new starter. This undermines the Head Coach and makes the whole organization look bad. |

Ill post what I did in the other thread:

BpG ... read your sig ... don't second guess the family's decisions. ********************************************************************* ... at least we have the Cavaliers. |

When did Dallas offer a 1st and 3rd for Anderson? Last I heard when Derek became a free agent, no other teams showed interest.
I must admit I didn't read your entire post. I get the impression, along with posters like Vers, you only back this team when your opinion is met by the teams actions. All along you said the coaches play the player that gives them the best opportunity to win. Now they feel Quinn should start at QB and low and behold, your opinion about the team changes! |

If you didn't read my post why would you even bother commenting?

I said I didn't read your ENTIRE post! I just went back and finished it. Again, when did the Cowboys offer a 1st and 3rd for D.A.?

I am shocked by this decision as well. It kind of goes against our "win now" mentality.
DA actually had a solid game (until his horrendous throw), coaching blew the game. If Brady comes in and tears it up, DA's trade value plummets. I guess I wouldn't cry if Brady tore it up though But it would have been nice to get some value for DA. But we really don't know if the Dallas situation was legit or not, its only a rumor. If it is true, ssems to me like Phil and co. got greedy hoping DA would increase his value (fail) and now its hitting us in the face. |

|
Ummm, D.A. became a Free Agent! All Dallas had to do was offer him the right amount of cash! |

Restricted FA. 1st and 3rd round pick tender was placed on him.

You're correct....my bad!

I can still see some trade value for DA after the season as he is an experienced QB and there is the "WE CAN COACH HIM BETTER" philosophy that some teams have. I am thinking a 3rd most likely a 4th tho. Or multiple picks to the right qb hungry team, Kansas City anyone, they wanted to sign Culpepper. I was looking at some stats I found on washingtonpost.com(no way guaranteed accurate tho) and saw that we have like 17 dropped passes as a team. The same chart showed that the Chargers, where Rivers is solid, has only 7. If you were to do the math where DA had 10 less drops that would increase his accuaracy to like 54 percent. Even if we hadn't had a drop all year he still checks in at around 56 percent completion percentage which in the AFC, is better than only Thigpen from KC, Russell from Oakland and equal to Flacco. That percentage would be only better than Hasslebacks in the NFC and he's been hurt. Fact is, even without the drops, DA hasn't been that accurate. Give him pressure and he folds. Now, I am not sure that BQ is any better but anything that could possibly give the team a spark I would say try it.

lol. ok now let me fix this: Couch - cant even make 3rd string job anywhere. Holcomb - career backup aka D.Anderson. Dilfer - veteran/getting ready to retire Garcia - west coast qb/warm weather guy/up and downs everywhere he goes. Frye - 3rd round pick/career backup Anderson - Couldnt make 3rd string at BAL/ INT machine/Career backup in NFL Quinn - 4 year starter at Notre Dame/ Coached under Weis who developed Tom Brady/ Has not got a chance to play in the NFL/ All the upside in the world/ 1st Round Draft Pick/ Fan Favorite. |
