The Browns made a trade to bolster their young secondary Wednesday, acquiring four-year veteran Travis Daniels from the Dolphins for an undisclosed draft pick.

Daniels, who's played in 44 career games with 25 starts, has NFL experience at both cornerback and safety. He has 3 career interceptions, one in each of his previous three seasons.

The trade is contingent upon Daniels passing a physical with the Browns.

He started 14 games at cornerback as a rookie and started at both cornerback and safety last season. At 6-foot-1, he could have a chance to be the "big" corner the Browns have been missing.

Daniels will turn 26 the day after the Browns' season opener against the Cowboys. He's a native of Hollywood, Fla., who was a fourth-round pick of the Dolphins in 2005. He was a four-year contributor and a two-year starter during his college career at LSU.

Undrafted rookie Mil'von James was waived.

Dolphins trade Travis Daniels
By Edgar Thompson | Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 01:59 PM

Defensive back Travis Daniels’ up-and-down career with the Dolphins has ended.

The team announced it has traded Daniels, a fourth-round pick in 2005, to the Cleveland Brown for an undisclosed draft choice.

Daniels started 25 games during three seasons for the Dolphins, but his play dropped off significantly since his rookie season under Nick Saban, his former coach at LSU.

Daniels had 62 tackles and 13 passes defended as a rookie, but had a combined 63 tackles and six passes defended the past two seasons.

Daniels, 25, bottomed out last season, when he routinely gave up big plays and seemed to lose his confidence. Daniels allowed an average of 10.9 yards per completion in 2007, ranking among the worst in the NFL.

Travis Daniels

College career

2001
link
As a freshman at LSU in 2001, Daniels saw his first action of the season against Tennessee in the SEC Championship game. He was forced into action after an injury to Randall Gay. Prior to his appearance, he was going to redshirt his rookie season. When asked about giving up his redshirt, he said, "I play for the letters on my helmet, not the numbers on my jersey." During the game, he broke up two passes including one in the end zone, but did not record any tackles. In a Sugar Bowl win over Illinois, Daniels played but did not accumulate any statistics.

2002
Daniels was a top backup in the Tigers' secondary as a sophomore, seeing most of his time in nickel and dime packages. A hamstring injury shortened his season, but he did appear in five games in 2002. On the year, Daniels recorded three tackles, including one for a loss. He also broke up one pass and had two quarterback hurries.

2003
Daniels stepped into a starting role in 2003, opening all 14 games for the Tigers as a junior. He started the first six games of the season at free safety before moving to cornerback for the final eight contests after the emergence of LaRon Landry. Daniels recorded 58 tackles, including 6.5 for losses, two sacks, three quarterback hurries and two interceptions. He also led the Tigers with 26 pass breakups. His first interception came just before halftime in a win over Mississippi State, which he returned 48 yards for a score. His other interception came against Arizona.

Daniels set a season-high with seven tackles in a September game against Georgia. In the aforementioned game against Mississippi State, Daniels six tackles, a sack and a forced fumble to his interception. In the BCS National Championship win over Oklahoma, he recorded four tackles including one for a two-yard loss.

2004
In 2004, Daniels and fellow senior Corey Webster combined to form one top cornerback tandems in the nation. Daniels started all 12 games for the Tigers, finishing his career with 26 straight starts. Against Iowa in the Capital One Bowl, he tallied seven tackles. Daniels finished the season with 48 tackles and nine pass break-ups. He participated in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama following the season.

Professional career

At LSU's Pro Day in March 2005, Daniels was clocked at 4.57 and 4.55 in the 40-yard dash, had a 37-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-2 long jump, 4.07 short shuttle and 6.86 three-cone drill.

On April 24, Daniels was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the fourth round (104th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft. At LSU, Daniels was recruited by and played for Nick Saban, who was in his first season as head coach of the Dolphins in 2005. Daniels was one of three SEC players chosen by the Dolphins in 2005. He signed a four-year contract with the Dolphins on July 22. The deal included a $458,000 signing bonus, and also a potential $1.4 million incentive bonus in the final year (2008).

2005
As a rookie in 2005 ,Daniels appeared in all 16 games for the Dolphins including 14 starts that tied for the team record for a rookie defensive back. Along with Ronnie Brown and Channing Crowder, it marked the first time since 1996 that three or more Dolphins rookies started a minimum of 10 games. Daniels recorded 61 (47 solo) tackles on the year, a figure that ranked fifth on the team and second among defensive backs behind only Lance Schulters' 77. He also added an interception, a fumble recovery and 13 passes defensed. His first career interception came in the season opener, when he picked off a Jake Plummer pass in the fourth quarter of a 34-10 win over the Denver Broncos. His lone fumble recovery came after linebacker Channing Crowder forced the ball from then-Atlanta Falcons fullback Justin Griffith.

2006
In 2006, an ankle injury caused Daniels to miss the entire preseason as well as the first four games of the regular season. He went on to appear in the team's final 12 contests, starting six. On the year, racked up 36 tackles, an interception and two passes defensed. His lone interception came against the Tennessee Titans on September 24, as he picked off a Kerry Collins pass at the Dolphins’ 31 with less than two minutes remaining in the game to preserve a 13-10 win. Daniels record a season-high eight tackles in the season finale against the Indianapolis Colts.

2007
Daniels is expected to compete for a starting cornerback job in 2007 under new head coach Cam Cameron. He is likely to open the season as the starting left cornerback if André Goodman is not recovered from shoulder surgery.

Not the splash I was hoping for but I trust Phil...obviously. I really believe that Ty Law would be an upgrade at our nickel spot. That would help immensely IMHO.

Who knows....this sounds very Daven Holly like....

Missing our 3rd and 5th already it had better be at least a 6th or 7th. This guy doesn't seem like he should warrant more than that.

Savage got Fraley for a 6th rounder, I can't imagine it being anything higher than that for a guy whose performance "bottomed out". But they must see something in him to trade for him.

This guy maybe/probably was going to be cut anyways but might not have made it down the waiver wire to us.

We have short corners, so this should at least be potential upside, and he has some experience.

Ty Law wants starter money and starter position. If we brought him in he wouldn't be playing nickel unless he managed to become significantly humbled in his time off.

He has experience which is more we can say for the rest of the boys. He could possibly be a good corner. You have to be pretty good to start as a rookie...even if it was the Dolphins.

How much are the Browns really missing Holly right now. He wasnt great but he played better then any of the guys out there right now. Even Eric Wright looked bad.

Losing Holly was bad and it shows everytime the DB's get beat out there. Which is happening alot in the last 2 games.

I agree, losing Holly really hurts now. I honestly wouldn't be opposed to trading a 3rd for Lito because odds are he would be better then any guy we could get in that position in the draft.

This guy is an upgarde over Terry Cousin and I'd even argue that he could take over Eric Wright's spot and end up pushing him into the nickel.

I've only seen him on occasions, but I have heard very positive things about him. I have a couple friends who are Dolphin fans and while Daniels certainly isn't a bonafied number one, his potential is endless and he's been completely consistent since joining the NFL.

That's all we need right now, some consistency to stop the bleeding.

I am happy with this as long as we didn't give up to much. I really wouldn't be surprised if this guy pushed Wright to the nickel.

I really like his size.

Hmmm... never heard of the guy...
his stats arent anything special..looks like has played in just about every game since he's been in the league...i guess thats a good thing, the last thing we need is a injury prone player.

He deserves a shot, thats for sure

I like his size too, and I am glad to hear you have heard going things, but I was hoping more for a proven players then Daniels, but hopefully he can step it up and play good ball.

He had an awesome rookie season in 2005 then a preseason ankle injury 2006 that lingered, then the coaching carousel with the fish, plus he's still young and Tucker should be able to bring out his best. I hope Confused

I certainly see this as a move in the right direction....but I'm not familiar with Travis Daniels and I kinda just see it as adding another mediocre to bad DB. I guess his size is a bonus but this isn't the move that's going to solve our secondary problems. It may help our depth but this guy is obviously not starting caliber and viewed as surplus by the lowly Dolphins.
