Why did we have to go and grab him? We had 3 pretty good MLB's in Davis, Jackson, & Williams. We didn't have three good CB's and we still don't, I'm starting to doubt that we have 2 "pretty good" cornerbacks, we might not even have 1 that is above being decent. My only point is that we should have drafted some cornerback, any cornerback to at least have depth or something we could develop. Daniels is a bandaid. We traded Bodded who is considered one of the top & up and coming CB's in the league and is only 26 for a 29 yr old DT that is great but is know to be lazy and take at least every other play off (Gerard Warren 2 possibly) when we already had a younger Shaun Smith who was developing into a great NT. If it was up to me we would've kept Bodden and the pick and got a backup nose and a backup CB in the draft but I'm not the boss. Go Browns! |

Hoosier - Bodden was decent, I dont think he was or is becoming one of the top/up-and coming corners. He played well against the Bengals it seemed like mostly, but other than that he was just sort of decent. We traded for Shaun Rogers because we felt McDonald and Wright were coming to be a very good combo, and Holly also in the mix, until he got injured. With Shaun Rogers we have a ligitamate 4 man rotation.
With Bodden, did you see how big of a contract he got? He has never made a pro-bowl, and really was nothing too great. OK yeah we already had a few good ILBs, but the people in the FO felt if there was anyone worth drafting in the 4th that they would be able to get after the draft. Beau Bell slid, Rucker slid, Rubin slid, and Alex Hall had way too much potential to pass up. The corners though were all about the same after the first 3 rounds, maybe after only the first day, I wouldnt know because I am not a scout. Sig By Me |

I agree, it's not all on Wright. The "God he sux" posts are as bad as the "He and McDonald remind one of Dixon and Minnie" posts.
I would feel a lot better if he didn't give such a huge cushion and could play bump and run on occasion. He is neither great nor a bust. Let's cross our fingers he's serviceable. It is only his second season. I still say if we get a good pass rush going it can only help our young DB's. ------------------------------ Remind me again why we didn't sign Michael Turner? |

Yeah, I can live with a seventh. Not sure how much this guy is going to help but rare is the 7th that pans out anyway. That does make 3 picks next year gone already. It seems a worrisome trend in Savages thinking. ------------------------------ Remind me again why we didn't sign Michael Turner? |

Not impressed with this pick-up.
That said, I think we are at the point where we are just going to have to deal with what we got: A pretty weak secondary. Brandon Macdonald is winning me over and I am in the camp that thinks you don't write off Eric Wright after one bad game. But they aren't studs in any case. I do like AJ Davis, I think he makes the team and comes in at Dime this season. Cousin is what he is, a veteran who is a step slow but knows where to be on the field. These guys can make plays at times, but it's going to be up to the front 7 and safeties to help them BIG TIME. Guess what position we are going to target next April? |

That sure doesnt sound good, maybe a change of scenery will do him good. Any depth at this point helps, I just wonder what draft pick we gave up to get him. Formerly Known as DawgHowl. DieHard Browns Fan Since 1989 |

why should we have drafted a cb when last years draft was so shallow at cb? outside the first rd there was nobody. i cant help but think this is a move to push wright and mcdonald even further and to provide more depth in the secondary as a whole. Maybe this is the demise of adams and not wright mcdonald or cousin. and whoever that was up their earlier that say he would come in and replace wright 2 push him to nickel is off their rocker. seriously? da the oline adams (at the begining of the game) j lewis all are getting some slack handed to them why doesnt wright deserve that too. he had a bad game game and prolly saved a td on the pass interference call and didnt get any help over top on the bump and run d they were playing when he gave up that td. i wouldnt crucify wright just yet.

I really don't like the idea of giving up a draft pick for a guy that will become a free agent next year. His salary for this year is pretty low though... $520K.

The other people get a break because: 1. The OLine starters aren't really a concern. The Giants were pass rushing us like they were the Patriots in the Superbowl. Sending in 6-7 men in at a time. It looked worse than it did because DA got sacked without a RB to help with pass protection. It was preseason. 2. DA is getting heat, its just not shown in this "acquire Travis Daniels" thread. 3. Lewis messed up big time, but its preseason and he's a polished vet. 4. Wright hasn't proven anything yet to people that realize it. A lot of people were satisfied with his play last season for some unknown reason. He plays too far off, like 15 yards. He had 71 tackles. A Cornerback has SEVENTY ONE tackles. It's just a statistic but when you watch how he plays, the reason he has 71 tackles is because he lets the person catch it after running up 5 yards and then tackles him. This isn't satisfactory play if it can be exploited every down. I am aware that he didn't get much help over the top on the interference play, but he consistently gets beat underneath. There is no excuse. Can't wait for o-eight! Get 'em Browns! Get 'em! |

Savage was fleeced by Jerry Jones, and now its the Big Tuna's turn at a feeding frenzy.
Big Tuna was cutting dead wood from Saban's reign of pain. whats the pick anyways? if he starts its a 5th and if he doesnt its a 7th?? Might as well since savage can only pick in the first 2 rounds, IS THAT HIS ONLY JOB? |

travis Who? It seems the Browns are searching for anyone to play corner. the Browns need to make a trade to get someone this year. If anyone decent comes on the waiver wire we need to grab him.

I think at this moment Savage is in panic mode. Giving away another draft choice is becomming a disturbing occurance. You build through the draft, not cast-off fish. Time to admit a mistake giving away the only good CB we had for a guy that will revert to form once the season starts. The Lions may not be the smartest team in the league but I'll bet they will be laughing at what we gave up to get Rodgers. Players have a Rep. for a reason. We're the only ones that can't figure that out. |

By the way on the Cleveland scout report they mentioned this was a great deal for the fish as he would have been cut anyway. Way to waste another draft pick.

Jeez...this board gets crazy at times. Here are my thoughts.
- It was just a 7th rounder...I have no problem with that. He is most likely better than anyone we would have got in the 7th (obviously he was 4th round talent). I am not a fan of trading picks but thsi is fine by me. - Wright was not as bad as he looked on MNF. - I am more concerned with the apparent miscommunication in the secondary. This happened a LOT last year (long S.Holmes TD and the entire 1st Cinci game). This needs fixed immediately. - I am not sure how Savage got fleeced by Jerry Jones. He has put more talent on this team than anyone the last 20 years so it hard to argue with him. - Travis Daniels seems like another guy who just needs a change of scenery and was forced out by a new regime. He could be a decent nickel guy for us later in the year. I also believe he was brought here to push the top 3 corners a little bit....which is a good thing. - Bodden was overrated and his contract with the Lions was absurd and he was overpaid. he wasn't that good and if our injury list is growing he would probably be leading the way with a high ankle sprain. Rogers is twice the player Bodden is right now. - Our front seven need to step up, play well, and take the pressure off the corners and our secondary would be just fine. Time for Wimbley to show us he is worth that 1st round pick. I was really expecting a lot from Corey Williams and he hasn't shown up yet either. Rogers will be just fine and a force for us. _______________________ Rule#76: No excuses...Play like a champion |

I live outside of Philly and if we could somehow trade for Lito Sheppard we would be set on the left side. He has been bitten by the injury bug lately but when he is healthy he is a lock down corner with big play potential. 2 picks returned a 100 yds for tds in the same season. He is a ball hawk. Come on Phil...Pull that trade off

Eric Wright had a bad preseason game, he played pretty good last year when he started...lets not go all "typical Cleveland Browns fans" and start going crazy based on one poor performance in a preseason football game.
This obviously isn't the move we were all looking for, but I'm sure this guy is an upgrade over Mil'von James. I still think Savage is working on more upgrades. The only problem is I don't really think he has too many pieces to work with. We're already without our 3rd and 5th rounders, no way is he going to trade away our 1st or 2nd...and probably not even our 4th. We need to build this team through the draft (that's why the Steelers are consistent contenders- they draft the right way) so let Phil get creative this season, lets be patient and hope by 2009 Phil can address this properly. In the meantime, we can win with the guys here. Let Mel Tucker improve these young corners that are here and lets hope Phil can bring in some help from the waiver wire. I would love to see Lito Shepperd in a Browns uni, but I don't think we have enough to make that trade. Ty Law, sure, but only for the right price. I could see a guy like that disrupting the lockerroom too which is something that Romeo was able to fix. |

we sent a 2009 seventh round pick to miami for Daniels. 7th round picks are usually just practice squad players anyways. so i dont mind giving a 7th up.
|
||||
|
I'm okay with giving up a draft pick ... especially a 7th. Shouldn't we have some extra picks next year from trading one of our QBs?
Also ... people need to calm down about EW in the preseason. |
||||
|
Rogers played his butt off all year every year. His rep came because of the media and Matt Millen being a moron. He drafted WR #1 3 years in a row. Look back, how many 7th rounders on teams in the past 5 years are in the NFL. How many of them are ACTIVE back-ups and how many are starters? ------------- The bottom 5 teams in rushing attempts (the Browns being one of them) are a combined 1-14. How about trying to run the ball? |
