Good point FlapJack...unlike other years we are not one of the early ones in the picking order. Everyone is looking for 3rd, 4th, 5th CBs for their team. Or upgrades on what they have.

Slowmo...don't worry EW is the real deal. What most just don't realize is he's had a little more than 30 starts at CB since HS and around half came starting for us last season. He's a work in progress. He'll have good days and bad, unfortunately without a pass rush the bad will stick out like a sore thumb as he is on an Island. The kid is good and should become a great CB. Year 3 or 4 I think he will be considered a Pro-Bowler type. Until then he's a work in progress.

Our problem with the passing game is PASS RUSH. You can't give WRs time for double and triple moves. With a consistent pass rush CBs can play tighter and jump routes. Without they have to lay off and give the cushion. Just like a QB with no protection has to get rid of that ball in 2-3 seconds...with protection he can survey the field and pump fake, etc. Its all about the LOS! Wink

I think your point is well made but you also have to admit our D.B. corp combined is sub par. Adding another non impact player isn't going to help! quantity doesn't equal quality! Our d.b.'s have really been a sore thumb for awhile, consider that bengals game last season. our D.B.'s were continually burned thats what kept the Bungles in the game! Now we're minus two exp. D.B.'s and trying to fill their shoes isn't going to happen in one pre season!

If our pass rush is good enough our DB's won't HAVE to cover that well. Beat up the QB and by the second quarter he's having trouble raising his arms to throw the ball *evil snicker*
It's time to get downright nasty. Send everyone and kill the QB.
Won't happen though, RAC doesn't like pressure D. We haven't put pressure on a QB since he got here.I'll have to see the change before I believe there is one.

Remind me again why we didn't sign Michael Turner?

Not so fast. I dont think Mel Tuck will attack until the season begins. The real D wont arrive til Dallas game. I just feel our DBs are young and skilled but out of sync most times. We have coaching continuity & that should help. Its not going to be easy dawg fans. I find it interesting that teams throw AWAY from our 5th rounder-thanks Phil. But this jeremy Perry, Nick Sorensen, Mike Adams lineup is cause for concern. I think Tucks communication skills with players will grow into good things on the field. We HAVE to contain the run- PERIOD. It begins and ends there. Pool is going to step up, I feel and be a Sean Jones type leader. I'm hoping we improve with the turnover ratio department. It will make or break this team- plain and simple.

No need for panic because we hopefully will stay injury free and grow as a tight family Defense. Tucks going to do some pressure stuff & frequently if we contain the running game.

YOU'VE GOTTA STOP SOMEBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brett from Solon Ohio writes: We all know the struggles the cleveland secondary has had during these preseason games. How much do you think Travis Daniels will help and will contribute to the woefull secondary

James Walker: I talked to someone this weekend who was familiar with Travis Daniels in Miami, Brett. They described Daniels as a player that won't necessarily win you a game, but he won't lose the game either. Daniels was described as a smart player that physically has some limitations but can be counted on to follow coaching and be in the right spots. That should be an upgrade of most of the backups in the secondary Cleveland already has.

Cleveland Browns cornerback Travis Daniels says he's put Miami Dolphins behind him
Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporterlink
Cornerbacks need to have short memories. They cannot allow one blown coverage to bother them or it soon will lead to another.

Cornerbacks who played for the Miami Dolphins in 2007 are smart to have virtually no memory. Their position is difficult enough without having to reflect on week after week of ineptitude.

Travis Daniels, traded by Miami to Cleveland on Aug. 20, played in all 16 games of a 1-15 season. The Dolphins opened with 13 straight losses.

"Any time you go that long without a win, and only finish with one, it's extremely tough to deal with," he said. "As a competitor, you always want to come out on top, so when it doesn't happen, it wears on you. You keep putting the work in, but it doesn't show on Sundays."

That is pretty much the extent of what Daniels chooses to recall about Miami's nightmarish season.

"I've moved on, believe me," said Daniels, who also played for the Dolphins in 2005 and 2006. "The Dolphins are in the past. As soon as I got the call saying I was traded to Cleveland, everything I did down there became irrelevant."

Daniels got word of the trade after emerging from a meeting.

"It caught me by surprise, no question," he said. "At the same time, I was excited to be going to the Browns."

Daniels relished the opportunity to reunite with Browns defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, whom he first got to know in high school. Tucker was on coach Nick Saban's staff at Louisiana State University when he traveled to Daniels' home in Hollywood, Fla., on a recruiting visit.

Whatever Tucker said worked. Daniels was a four-year letterman with the Tigers (2001-04), starting 26 games. He started all 14 as a junior as LSU won the BCS National Championship, defeating Oklahoma in the title game in January 2004.

By the time Daniels had arrived in Baton Rouge, La., however, Tucker had moved on to Ohio State.

"It's great to see coach Tucker again," Daniels said. "I'm happy to finally get the chance to work with him, to learn from him, because he's a very good coach."

The Dolphins selected Daniels in the fourth round in 2005. Miami's coach at the time was Saban, who also had Daniels in 2006 before moving on to Alabama.

Daniels started 20 of 28 games in his first two seasons in Miami.

"I've learned as much football from coach Saban as anybody," he said. "The thing he always stressed was having a short memory at corner. You're going to get beat at some point. It's how you respond that matters."

With Saban gone last year, Daniels started five games, shuttling between safety and corner.

The Browns acquired him to provide depth in the secondary. The fact that he has 25 NFL starts is significant given the relative inexperience of the projected starting corners. How much Daniels plays will depend on the health of guys in front of him.

"We haven't really talked about a role for me," he said. "Right now all I'm concerned about is going out and getting caught up. A lot of guys have been here for so many days - in training camp and OTAs - so I have a lot of work to do in a short time."

whatever role he ends up with I hope he can perform and have an impact like his rookie season Wink
