I saw that Kendall Simmons was released. The only way he would be released is if the patriots feel someone on their practice squad or someone else's practice squad can make a greater contribution.

During the season we have done nothing to raid other teams practice squads. I'm fairly sure that we could find some contributing players who are waiting for a chance.

Maybe we are resisting until the end of the season to show loyalty to the players who are already here. Maybe there is some code of ethics concerning raiding another team's practice squad during the season.

Any thoughts?

I think we raided the Jets. so unless they have some other rejects we won't be getting anyone else to worship the Mangini golden idol.

you can only have 53 men on your roster. any more than that would have to be placed on the practice squad. so what would the point be. we allready have our 53. of course we may find better, and then designate some of our current players to the p.s. i myself dont see that happening. but hey, it was a good thaught.

Loyalty to the players that are already here?????

Like the Loyalty we have shown Brady Quinn?
Or the fine way we have treated Josh Cribbs?

There are no other teams. There's us and the Jets. Now we might trade the first pick in the draft to the Jets for some Magic Beans and a third string wide receiver but other than that we are all set as is. This team is playing PERFECT Cleveland Browns football.

There is a reason these guys are on the practice squad and it's not because they're pro-bowlers. The Browns already lack talent; they don't need any less.

I would argue that there are young practice squad players on the better teams who could come in here and contribute. Making our 53 would not be as difficult as making the Pats 53, Steelers 53 etc.

Maybe, but I was being somewhat facetious; however, I could ask why aren't the other bad teams (Rams, Lions, Bucs) raiding the practice squads of the Steelers, Pats, Vikings, etc.?

From the articles I have read, Lerner is stark raving mad. I sense there are going to be some big changes coming, maybe as soon as this coming week, meaning new players being brought in, etc.

I believe (not positive on this) that when you sign a player from someone else's practice squad, you must sign them to your active roster NOT your own practice squad. That also means league minimum contracts at least. That would have both roster and cap implications.

Yes, there are always exceptions to any rule. But for every James Harrison there are 300 Paul Hubbard's.

good point sboetcher but at this point in your season you can at least try to hit a home run with one of these teams cast offs that are alittle better at evaluating talent than your team is and cut some dead weight at the same time

we have no ability to judge talent. We draft poor and bring in fa busts. If we brought in practice squad guys it would be admiting we suck that bad.......Ok we suck that bad......try anything!

probowl LT, NT, KR, WR, LS, QB*. And we are here still

Don't forget where we got DA...

The Stealer scheme and mentality is able to turn average players into good ones and good players into great ones. Chaun Thompson and Kam Wimbley would both post double-digit sacks if they were in Pukesburgh...

Maybe, but remember, you'll end up paying the new guy as well as probably owing the guy you cut some money.

I would venture to guess that there is a less than 1% statistical chance of finding the "diamond in the rough". Besides, the practice squad guys have already been (or should have been ) scouted and 99% of the time, the scouting reports turn out to be right for these guys. Statistically and economically, it doesn't make sense.

The Browns should be concentrating on the upcoming draft and not another team's practice squad.

we dont have the ammo for the fight every week. we could of got simmons, chambers, derick alexander, the right tackle that use to play for the eagles, edgeren james, garcia, etc if we did raid the fa wire.

not that garcia is the best fit but look at how the bucs are without him. Funny how teams like miami and the niners look to `upgrade` their Marino and garcia and end up floundering for years afterwards.

we allready have our 53.

yeah but the problem is out of those 53 how many are worthy of actually keeping their jobs?

Of course your roster is always going to be full but if you can upgrade somewhere why would you not do that?

Trust me we can be upgraded at almost every position except for LT and KR. Name me one other position that we could not upgrade?

Yeah and don't forget how well that turned out. He put our QB position back about 3 years because he had 7 decent games.

Bad example but nice try.

This is not the team that we call the Browns that team left and never came back!!

I agree with those saying we should try. The way I look at it, the rest of this season should be treated like the last month of baseball season for a losing team. All about evaluation.

Who know, we may find a halfway decent Safety or LB, leaving us 1 less hole to fill next off-season.

We're not playing competitive football right now,so instead of just going through the motions the rest of the season, let's get some guys out there that are hungry and might show something.

And seriously, a practice squad player would probably be an improvement over:

Elam,St.Clair,Womack, any of out TE's,Poteat, and several of our LB's.

If we can get 1 or 2 guys that are competent in any of these positions, it's a successful strategy.

I heard that the Browns tried to snag a tight end off the Colts practice squad, but the colts dropped someone off their roster and added the TE. Evidently there must be a 24 hour period where the current team has the option of finding a spot for that player.

That is true Dawgtracker. So the Colts must have really liked that TE to do that.

Don't waste the money on anyone until this czar (Holmgren) comes in to evaluate!

We have a lot of holes to fill. Why not try to see if we can get a quality player or two. I'm sure there would be misses too, but any guys we could bring in can't be much worse than some of the guys we got now.Salary implications wouldn't be that bad, most of these guys would get league minimum.

Totally agree usngunz75--i hope we start doing it ASAP. Other teams are constantly on the lookout for potential in other teams' practice squads or free agents--if we can find someone who we can pay a lot less, and has the same potential, we have a gold mine. They are out there, but we won't know unless we try.
