Without having to sign any first round picks...or first day picks...I would think we would have some cap room. Even if it was for 3 years that would allow our younger backs to mature with an experienced, talented, proven, succesful db in front of them. The other guys can battle for the nickel spots and depth. Next year we will have Holly back into the mix. It could push us over the top defensively and into the Super Bowl this year. And with young talent coming up could lengthen our window a bit.

Since there is already a link, I’ll elaborate with what I heard during a Sports Center break on 1460 The Fan yesterday afternoon. It was brief, but the update was that Ty Law had actually contacted Romeo about coming to the Browns. True or not? I couldn’t care less. But I love hearing that a player is asking to join our future champion.
I don't know how promising that sounds, but I would certainly like to have Law as a member of the Browns this year. He is very intelligent, plays well in zone coverages, has good instincts as to how routes are developing, and gets a real good break on the ball.
I'm just not sold on Ty Law as the answer. Living here in KC I got to watch him play a lot and he never really looked that good. Seemed unmotivated and undisciplined in his playing style. I've met Herm Edwards and if that man can't motivate someone to play then I'm not sure if anyone can. Not sure yet how great of a coach he is but I gained a lot of respect for him as a man when I met and talked with him.
Maybe the new scene and a better season outlook will bring Law around because he just didn't look like he wanted to play football anymore when he was on the field last year. And I don't want someone here who is just playing for the money.

So do I.....I do seem to remember Savage saying we were about played out with the cash for the year, so I don't know if we will have the wiggle room to get it done.

Just for clarification, when talking about being up against the budget, he was referring to the internal budget. I.E. how much of Randy Lerner's $ they are allowed to spend. As for the salary cap we have plenty of room. Just remember, the Browns have been manipulating the cap. Any bonuses not paid are added to cap space the following year. Therefore when you write the bonus into a players contract for playing 90% of the snaps, but the player is a kicker, the the $1 million bonus he has no chance of earning is added to the following years cap space. However, doesn't mean Lerner wants to spend all that $. He has to turn a profit. Based on that he tells Savage and Trip how much they can allocate to player salaries in a given year. Based on that, we don't have much wiggle room, and that's why signing Ty Law remains a longshot, unless he is willing to negotiate way down for the opportunity to make a difference for a team on the rise.
Ty Law is definitely not the answer to our CB woes but he would make a good band-aid to get us through the year. He's played under Crennel in the past. If the price is right I say we give him a strong look, especially if he wants to come here.

Law is a good Vet who is familiar with our system...we have a need for veteran depth (possibly a starter) but I'm thinking his worth just might be in bringing along EW, McD and the other youngsters, Davis, James.
But I don't know how much we are interested as we didn't go out of our way - it was he who has initiated interest in us...ahhhh how nice to have finally established NFL respectability.

He played very well for Crennel too. If he contacted Crennel he must have enjoyed playing for him. The KC thing could have been many reasons. Maybe the system or style did not fit Law's way of playing. I do not know what KC's d-line did either. If they were bad we all know what that does to d-backs. Our line should be good which means our d-backs should have a better season as well. Throw Law in and boom, I think we have a winner.
Don't we have a uncapped year coming up. I would think that could some how be manipulated. Sign him with a big pay off ciming in that uncapped season.
prefer getting a vet that isn't past his prime, Law fell off the face of the earth playing in KC, but one vet who played in a similar system with great PAST success, is better than NO vet.
MHO, I hope we don't pull another Ted Washington. He had character and work ethic, BUT little to NO game left.....pass, please, Cousins, should show the way, right.....GO Browns!!!! PS,...like all of us...some guys want another paycheck....GO Brown!!!!!
Of course Law is not the answer. He's 34 years old. Why do people keep stating the obvious? What he might be is a great band aid for a year or two. McDonald and Wright may turn out to be pro bowlers and if that's so then Cousins and Law can bring them along. McDonald or Wright might not be the long term answer if that's the case then Cousins and Law will be there until we draft a stud next year. The two of them can keep us afloat for a couple of years.

No offense but what has Herm Edwards done for Kansas City since he got there? I remember them having one of the best O-lines in football before he got there, and now they are one of the worst. He has made that whole team worse.
